Global Steel Mill Product Matrix

Production, Import, Export and Apparent Consumption

Where? What? How Much?

World Steel Dynamics (WSD) has created two studies to answer these questions and to provide special insights into the possible evolution of the steel industry in the years ahead. Core Report “Global Steel Mill Product Matrix”, which examines the historic evolution of semi and finished steel product markets for 80 countries and regions from 1985 to 2005; and Limited Edition Study – Steel Product Matrix Forecast, which forecasts the product data annually from 2006 to 2015.

The steel industry continues to become increasingly global, with steel trade assuming an ever more vital role in balancing supply/demand disparities by country and region. Global steel trade grew by 109% from 1985 to 2005, amounting in 2005 to 354 million metric tonnes (or 33% of the output of semi and finished steel products). The growth in international trade from 1985 to 2005 was 306% for billet and slab, 132% for flat products and 51% for long products. The WSD forecast is for an additional 1% rise by 2015 to 358 million tonnes.

The two reports provide historic and forecast data by country and region, and by product, for apparent consumption, production, imports and exports. Product coverage includes:

  • Flat-rolled products, including hot-rolled sheet, cold-rolled sheet, tinplate, galvanized sheet and other coated.
  • Long products, including structurals, wire rod, rebar and bar.
  • Other products, including rail and pipe/tube.

We consider these reports a must for steel producers, traders and users who are concerned with the marketing and availability of steel products. Global Steel Mill Product Matrix sells for $3,000 to non-subscribers, or is included in an annual subscription to World Steel Dynamics. The Matrix Forecast sells for $5,000.
